Five Hair DIYs for Lovely Locks


Everyone wants healthy, beautiful hair, and a lot of products out there promise results. Unfortunately, many of them are filled with synthetic chemicals that can actually be harmful. But quick and simple DIYs—made with natural essential oils—can be used for anything from frizz to conditioning.

Hair Detangler

When you wake up or your child wakes up with bed head, it can be tedious to work through all the tangles. This hair detangler uses Rosemary, Patchouli, Geranium, and Tea Tree essential oils, which aid in detangling and provide additional benefits for your hair. Simply spritz and comb, and then you’re good to go!

Ingredients:

12-ounce (or larger) spray bottle
1½ cups distilled water
3 tablespoons marshmallow root
½ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons doTERRA Daily Conditioner
5 drops Rosemary essential oil
5 drops Patchouli essential oil
5 drops Geranium essential oil
5 drops Tea Tree essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Boil the water and marshmallow root in a small pan.
  2. Reduce the. heat and let simmer for 20–30 minutes.
  3. Let cool slightly and strain through a cheesecloth or wire strainer.
  4. While warm, pour into a bottle and add the conditioner, apple cider vinegar, and essential oils.
  5. Shake until combined.
  6. To use, spray a generous amount on wet hair and comb through.

Hair Perfume

If you’re looking for a natural way to capture a sweet scent on your hair, look no further. This hair perfume combines Ylang Ylang, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Lavender, and Grapefruit essential oils to create an exquisite aroma. All it takes is a light spray, and you’ll carry a luxurious scent with you throughout the day.

Ingredients:

⅓ cup rose water
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
5 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
4 drops Rosemary essential oil
5 drops Sandalwood essential oil
3 drops Lavender essential oil
4 drops Grapefruit essential oil*
Note: You can purchase rose water at most health food stores in the soap and hygiene aisle.

Instructions:

  1. In a fine-mist glass spray bottle, add the rose water, vanilla extract, and essential oils. Add more or less essential oil, depending on your preference.
  2. Shake and spray on your hair as desired.

*Please note that citrus oils are photosensitive and can lighten your hair if exposed to UV rays.

Leave-In Conditioning Spray

Conditioning your hair strengthens it and creates a silky shine, and this DIY leave-in conditioning spray gives you a natural way to enjoy that boost. Not only does the spray have a sweet scent, but Rosemary and Ylang Ylang essential oils also give support to stiff, overworked hair.

Ingredients:

3 parts distilled water
2½ tablespoons vegetable glycerin
1 tablespoon Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 tablespoon rose water
2 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
3 drops Rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in an eight-ounce glass spray bottle.
  2. Shake well and spray over damp hair after your normal shampoo and conditioner routine.
  3. Don’t rinse—rather, style your hair as usual.

Heat Protectant Spray

Blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can take a toll on the health of your hair. But natural options like this DIY heat protectant spray with Clary Sage and Geranium essential oils can help. Just spritz on before styling and enjoy having your hair feel full and healthy.

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
2 teaspoons doTERRA Daily Conditioner
1 cup water
5 drops Clary Sage essential oil
5 dops Geranium essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Pour half of the water into a spray bottle.
  2. Add the Fractionated Coconut Oil, sweet almond oil, conditioner, and essential oils into the bottle.
  3. Add the remaining water and shake well.
  4. To use, apply one spritz to your hair and work it through until lightly coated all over. Style as normal.

Easy Anti-Frizz Spray

Everyone experiences frizzy hair from time to time; however, this DIY easy anti-frizz spray—using safe ingredients, including Lavender essential oil—nourishes your hair while taming flyaways. Just spray a thin layer on your hair after styling for a sleek shine.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil
2 tablespoons ale vera gel
½ cup distilled water
5-10 drops Lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in an eight-ounce spray bottle and shake thoroughly before each use.
  2. Spray a thin layer on dry hair after styling to tame flyaways and everyday frizz.

Tip: Experiment with Tea Tree, Sandalwood, and Peppermint essential oils for added cleansing and invigorating benefits.
