Plant Description

You may be familiar with celery from the grocery store, but when it’s from a local farmer’s market, this plant looks drastically different. Apium graveolens—the Latin name for celery—is bright green and can grow up to three feet tall. Remarkably, it takes two years for the plant to fully mature and produce fruit.

Historically, celery was used as early as the fifth century in China. Today, it’s widely used in Indian Ayurvedic practices. Celery seeds are the primary repository for this beautiful essential oil, and doTERRA collects it through steam distillation.

Fun Fact: The first mention of celery in the English language was in 1664, and it was spelled sellery.
