Linalool and Blood Vessels


Smooth muscle lines blood vessels in the body. Smooth muscle is different from skeletal muscle in that it contracts and relaxes involuntarily due to nervous system cues. During exercise, smooth muscle contracts to facilitate increased blood flow throughout the body. During rest, the smooth muscle relaxes.


Recently published (May 2015) in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology is a study that finds that linalool by itself may be able to facilitate the normal process of relaxation of the blood vessels.* They report that this may happen because linalool activates biochemical pathways in the endothelial lining of the blood vessels, which in turn relaxes the underlying vascular smooth muscle.*
