The AromaTouch Technique Program Glossary

This dōTERRA program is built around two powerful essential oil applications: the AromaTouch Technique® and the AromaTouch® Hand Technique. These applications are the foundation of the AromaTouch program, while the certification path provides structure for learning, sharing, and teaching them.

This glossary outlines the core techniques and progression of roles so you can clearly see how you fit into the program and what opportunities are available at every stage.

Core Techniques

The AromaTouch Technique

The AromaTouch Technique is a step-by-step, structured essential oil application designed to promote overall wellness. It uses eight specific essential oils and gentle, rhythmic movements applied along the back, head, and feet.

Purpose: This full-body essential oil application creates consistent and repeatable results, supporting homeostasis within the body.

Certification: There are three levels of the AromaTouch Technique certification. See the Certification Path section below for more information.

The AromaTouch Hand Technique

This simplified version of the full AromaTouch Technique uses the same principles of aroma and connection with focused application on the hands. It’s quick to learn, easy to share, and immediately comforting in any setting. The hand technique uses a single essential oil that’s applied with simple, purposeful movements.

Purpose: This introductory and approachable essential oil application can be enjoyed by anyone.

Certification: There’s no certification required. It’s appropriate for all levels and commonly used in classes, events, and casual settings.

Certification Path

There are three dōTERRA certifications for the AromaTouch Technique. At every level, participants are encouraged to actively share the technique with their family, community, and dōTERRA team.

AromaTouch Technique Online Certification

This is someone who’s completed the AromaTouch Technique Certification course. The online certification covers the technique for personal use and authorizes sharing with family, community members, and teammates.

Permissions: You’re certified to share the technique with family, friends, and community members.

Next Step: You’re encouraged to attend a Technique Workshop hosted by an AromaTouch Ambassador for hands-on training with the technique. This is a requirement to achieve AromaTouch Advocate certification.

AromaTouch Advocate

This is someone who has completed both the AromaTouch Technique Certification course and attended an in-person Technique Workshop. This person is certified in the technique and may host demonstration classes for others who have completed the online course.

Their role is to share the technique with confidence, help others understand its purpose and flow, and extend the reach of AromaTouch within their family, team, and community.

Requirements: Complete the online course, attend a Technique Workshop, and receive an AromaTouch Advocate certificate.

Permissions: You can share the technique with family, friends, and community members. You’re authorized and encouraged to host demonstration classes.

Next Step: You share the technique and encourage others to receive online and Advocate levels of certification. You may qualify to become an Ambassador by meeting rank requirements, hosting demonstration classes, and fulfilling additional qualifications.

AromaTouch Ambassador

This is someone who has advanced through the AromaTouch Advocate level, met the required qualifications, and been officially certified at an Ambassador event hosted by the corporate AromaTouch team.

Ambassadors are certified in the technique at the highest level and are empowered to help ensure technique integrity by hosting workshops that certify new AromaTouch Advocates.

Requirements: You’re certified as an AromaTouch Advocate (see above), maintaining a rank of Premier and higher, actively teaching demonstration classes (minimum of three), and attend a Technique Workshop. Once all of these requirements are met you may submit an application to participate in an AromaTouch Ambassador training. You are authorized as an AromaTouch Ambassador only after attending an in person AromaTouch Ambassador certification training.

Permissions: You’re authorized to certify AromaTouch Advocates, host workshops, and serve as business-building leaders within the AromaTouch Technique program.

Role: This is the leadership level of the AromaTouch Technique program. AromaTouch Ambassadors are certified leaders who are entrusted with carrying Dr. Hill’s AromaTouch Technique vision forward. They’re the bridge between learning the technique and living and sharing it confidently.

Their role is to train, mentor, and inspire others to apply the technique correctly, experience its benefits, and feel empowered to share it.

Training & Events

Online Course

The dōTERRA AromaTouch Technique Certification course is a self-paced online education experience designed to teach participants how to confidently perform the AromaTouch Technique with eight dōTERRA essential oils and blends. Through guided instruction, participants learn the sequence and application of the technique, while also gaining a better understanding of how to create a calming, supportive experience.

By completing the course, participants build greater confidence to incorporate the technique into their personal wellness routine and share it with others.

Demonstration Class

This short introductory class is hosted by Wellness Advocates who have completed the AromaTouch Technique Certification course and are ideally at the AromaTouch Advocate level. The class is designed to give participants a taste of the AromaTouch Technique, usually lasting one hour or less. It often includes a brief walk-through of the AromaTouch movements and almost always features training on the AromaTouch Hand Technique.

Demonstration classes are encouraged for all who wish to share the technique and are required for those seeking to become AromaTouch Ambassadors.

Technique Workshop

This hands-on training is led by a certified AromaTouch Ambassador, usually lasting around three hours. Workshops typically are longer trainings that cover foundational instruction, followed by rotations of giving and receiving the full AromaTouch Technique under the Ambassador’s guidance, who ensures correct application and technique integrity.

Ambassadors may host workshops for their own teams or open them to participants from any dōTERRA team. Ambassadors may also charge the standard $35 participant fee for each Technique Workshop.

AromaTouch Technique FAQ

Find answers to the most common questions about the AromaTouch Technique®, training, certification, and sharing the experience with others.

What’s the AromaTouch Technique?

The AromaTouch Technique is a unique essential oil application that’s a meaningful way to share the benefits of essential oils. When performing the technique, you apply eight specific essential oils in a continuous rhythmic motion on the back, head, feet, and sometimes hands.

Is the AromaTouch Technique a massage?

No, the AromaTouch Technique isn’t a massage. It’s an essential oil application. The giver applies the oils with confident contact and gentle touch. Gentle touch can influence physiological responses in ways other communication methods simply can’t.

Unlike a massage—which involves powerful hand movements focused on things like breaking down muscular adhesions, stimulating the central nervous system, or aiding recovery—the gentleness of this technique offers a different spectrum of benefits.

What are the eight essential oils and why were they chosen?

The eight essential oils and blends used in the AromaTouch Technique are dōTERRA Balance®, Lavender, Tea Tree, dōTERRA On Guard®, AromaTouch®, Deep Blue®, Wild Orange, and Peppermint.

Each essential oil was selected for a specific purpose in the technique. dōTERRA Balance and Lavender help with creating a relaxing space, Tea Tree and dōTERRA On Guard are known for their cleansing and supportive benefits, AromaTouch and Deep Blue soothe and provide comfort, and Wild Orange and Peppermint close the technique with a reenergizing feeling for the senses.

How do you become certified in the AromaTouch Technique?

Take the AromaTouch Technique Certification course. Once you’ve completed the online course, you can register for a Technique Workshop hosted by an AromaTouch Ambassador in your area.

How can I become an AromaTouch Ambassador?

If you’re interested in becoming an AromaTouch Ambassador, start by completing the AromaTouch Technique Certification course to build a strong foundation in the technique.

From there, explore the Ambassador application process and training. Ambassadors receive additional training that prepares them to teach and host authorized AromaTouch certification trainings.

To discover more about current eligibility requirements, upcoming Ambassador trainings, and how to apply, contact aromatouch@doterra.com.

What happened to the AromaTouch Trainer program? Can previously certified AromaTouch Trainers still host certification trainings?

The AromaTouch Trainer program was discontinued in 2022 and has been replaced by the new AromaTouch Ambassador opportunity for leaders who want to teach and support AromaTouch education. Those who were previously certified as AromaTouch Trainers are no longer authorized to host certification trainings under their former Trainer status.

However, they may become eligible to host trainings by becoming an AromaTouch Ambassador. For more information on the Ambassador opportunity and current requirements, contact aromatouch@doterra.com.

How much should an Ambassador charge for a Technique Workshop?

The fee should never exceed $35 USD.

AromaTouch Technique Adaptations & Considerations

What if someone prefers not to have their feet or their hair touched?

The full AromaTouch Technique includes touching the head and feet. For those who request you avoid those areas, respect their choice and skip to the next step. You might ask to use their hands during the foot portions of the technique.

What if someone can’t lie on their stomach or use a massage table?

The AromaTouch Technique can be modified to accommodate different positions, such as lying on the side or sitting comfortably and leaning forward in a chair.

What if someone chooses not to use one of the essential oils in the AromaTouch Technique?

If a participant chooses not to use one of the eight essential oils in the AromaTouch Technique, simply use a carrier oil like Fractionated Coconut Oil in its place but continue to do all the movements associated with that portion of the technique.

Can the AromaTouch Technique be adapted for pregnancy or other health conditions?

The AromaTouch Technique is adaptable for various health conditions. Ambassadors are trained to guide and answer questions in their workshops. Contact a local Ambassador or email aromatouch@doterra.com for guidance.

What adjustments need to be made when offering the AromaTouch Technique to children or the elderly?

Adjustments may include the amount of essential oil applied to the individual or the position where it’s applied. We encourage you to attend a Technique Workshop and work with a local Ambassador or reach out to aromatouch@doterra.com for guidance.
