Spearmint and Dill May Support Healthy Nervous System Function

Surprisingly, Spearmint and Dill essential oils have very similar chemistry. The top chemical constituent of each essential oil is a form of carvone. Spearmint is high in (R)-(-)-carvone, and Dill is high in (S)-(+)-carvone. Though their aromas are very different, (R)-(-) carvone and (S)-(+) carvone share a rather interesting effect according to a recently published study by Brazilian neuroscientists (March 2016). Both forms of carvone demonstrated, in an experimental preclinical study, a statistically significant calming effect against a heightened state of excitement.* The authors theorize that this effect is due to carvone affecting voltage-gated sodium channels, which Peppermint’s top constituent, menthol, is known to affect.*
