Litsea Essential Oil

Litsea has been used by the indigenous people of Taiwan in traditional wellness practices for centuries. Also referred to as mountain pepper, litsea trees bear pale, lemon-scented flowers and small fruits that look like little peppers—hence the nickname.

The strong, citrusy aroma of Litsea essential oil creates an uplifting environment.

Tangerine Essential Oil

Tangerines are among the most widely cultivated citrus fruits worldwide—second in popularity only to the sweet orange. Tangerines are believed to have been developed in Morocco, receiving their name from the stylish seaport city of Tangier, where visiting Europeans and Americans first became enamored with this tasty fruit in the 1700s.

Sweetest of the citrus fruits, tangerines are a hybrid variety of mandarin, with a stronger flavor than sweet oranges. The small, juicy, fruits have a thin peel, which is where the essential oil resides. It takes six pounds of tangerine peels to produce one 15 mL bottle of essential oil, varying by season, region, year, and other variables.

Sourced in Brazil, Tangerine essential oil has a sweet, tangy, and uplifting aroma.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Once called a forbidden fruit and one of the seven wonders of Barbados, grapefruit was first documented in 1750 by Welsh Reverend Griffith Hughes. The name grapefruit comes from the grape-like cluster in which the fruit grows.

Grapefruit essential oil can create an uplifting environment—ideal for motivating yourself throughout the day. The main chemical constituent of Grapefruit oil is limonene.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense has been a highly valued commodity for millennia, dating back to ancient civilizations like Babylon and Assyria. The precious resin is the oldest global supply chain. Babylonians and Assyrians would burn it in religious ceremonies and for contemplative meditation. The ancient Egyptians used it in perfumes and soothing skin salves. Oil from the resin has long been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese wellness practices.

Frankincense essential oil comes from the resin of the frankincense tree. Harvesters make shallow cuts in the bark, from which resin seeps out. The resin is left for two weeks to crystallize, then it’s scraped off the tree. This process repeats over multiple weeks throughout the harvesting season. Resin tears are carefully cleaned and organized by size and color by harvesters before distillation.

Cardamom Essential Oil

Cardamom is a member of the ginger family. It grows best in the shade and lives an average of seven years. It generally starts to bear fruit two to three years after planting and produces 10 to 20 cardamom seeds in each papery seedpod. It’s harvested from September through February.

Cardamom essential oil is steam-distilled from the plant’s small black seeds. Cardamom grows well in India, but the booming local spice industry often prevents it from being exported. doTERRA sources Cardamom oil from Guatemala and Honduras, which have similar climates. Cardamom is a newer crop to Honduras, offering significant additional income to banana and sugar cane farmers.
