Today, we're excited to talk to Kayla Monson as she shares how she likes to use Adaptiv® in her life.

doTERRA: Kayla, thank you so much for being here today.

Kayla Monson: Yeah, thank you for having me.

doTERRA: I am so interested to talk about this topic with you because I know it's something you're very passionate about. So let's just dive right in with my first question of: why is managing stress so important?

Kayla: Well, just a little bit about my background. I'm also a licensed marriage and family therapist. So, I have watched people go through a lot of different stressful life events during the years and just doing research myself on stress . . . and it just can lead to so many different negative health outcomes that you don't want. And it's something that we actually have control over managing. We can really, you know, give ourselves the best outcome possible as we age if we can manage our stress better.

doTERRA: Absolutely. And, you know, it's probably impossible to get rid of all the different pieces of stress in our lives. I think people wish that was the case, but I don't think it's possible. So, what are some habits that we can practice every single day to make sure that we're not adding extra stress on ourselves?

Kayla: I think it's funny because when I think about taking care of stress at the most basic level, it's like meeting your basic needs. Like eating meals on time when you're hungry and bonus if they're nutritious meals, sleeping, going to bed at the same time of day, drinking enough water and listening to your body. Meeting those basic needs can just really help you manage stress. Because what we don't realize when we get stressed, we forget to eat, or we don't drink a glass of water or, we have a cookie instead of a meal.

So, just being mindful of those different basic things that we do to take care of our bodies can make a big difference.

doTERRA: Yeah. Sometimes if we have that stress or that overwhelm, that rational part of our brain turns off a little bit and we don't take care of ourselves.

Kayla: Definitely.

doTERRA: So, what are some things then we can do when stress does happen? What are some lifestyle habits that we can adopt to deal with it better?

Kayla: So, I think that's going to be a little bit different from person to person, and kind of knowing what your coping skills are. For someone that might be going to the gym, it might be going for a run, it might be going for a bike ride. Whatever kind of gets that nervous, stress, energy, tension out.

For others, it might be reading a book, it might be taking a warm bath, it might be calling up your best friend. It might be journaling.

Really kind of I think it's helpful to know, in the back of your head, What do I do to unwind? What do I do to relax?” And kind of keep that mental checklist. So, when you feel that tension rising or, “Gosh, there's a lot going on in my life right now.” Going back to that checklist of kind of “What are those things that I enjoy doing that relax me, that comfort me?” And that's going to look different for every single person.

Just kind of figuring out for you what that is, is going to make a big difference before you are in a stressful period. Because what happens if you're already under stress and you don't know what those things are? What tends to happen is that sometimes you pick things that maybe aren't the healthiest. You take more risk. You try things that maybe increase your stress more.

Realizing what those are before the stress hits can be really important.

doTERRA: Absolutely. Now, looking at the doTERRA piece to this, how does the Adaptiv line fit into managing these stressful situations?

Kayla: So, when you look at that blend, the oils in it were really methodically chosen for how they help your body respond to everyday stressors. To anxiousness, to overwhelm and tension, really. Simply like including that.

And I really encourage people: It's one thing to get out the oil when you're stressed, and that's great. But if you can use it to begin your day before you're even stressed, your threshold to handle stress is going to be much better. You're going to handle things better that are thrown at you. You may not even have that response in your body, using something like that proactively. You may not tense up. You may not get some stomach distress that happens, when you are under chronic stress—that kind of thing if you implement the oils early.

I love that that blend is both really calming, but also has that uplifting piece to it so that it can kind of energize you a little bit as well. But also just really calms down your emotions, your brain, and just kind of slows you down a little bit.

doTERRA: Let's break down that blend just a little bit. Can you tell us about the oils that are inside of the blend.

Kayla: Yes. So, you have Copaiba, Rosemary, Wild Orange, Spearmint, Lavender . . . Magnolia is in there, and Neroli. Those are the other two. When I think of oils that are really high in something like linalool . . . which if you've been around for a little while, you've heard that thrown out. It's a very calming chemical constituent to have. So, they really picked these oils very mindfully, as far as how they interact with our minds and our bodies.

Also, using an oil aromatically like in the diffuser, smelling it from the bottle, from your hands, is actually like the fastest way to shift your mood. It can be a really quick way to shift how you're responding to something without taking much thought. I mean, doesn't take much to get the bottle out and take a little sniff and your body actually changes a little bit.

I personally love a lot of the oils in the blend, individually. Like Copaiba is my absolute favorite oil. Magnolia is really high up there. Everybody loves Lavender. Coriander, I don't use enough, but I should. But I love them all individually. And when you put them together, there's just magic that kind of happens.

doTERRA: I absolutely agree. I think anyone who's opened that bottle of Adaptiv, and just taken a smell, it just is like nothing else.

Kayla: Yeah, it's a really great blend.

doTERRA: So you've mentioned a few different ways that you like to use it. What are the ways, that you usually recommend to people, of incorporating that Adaptiv line into their everyday life?

Kayla: The biggest thing I would say is to have it on you. Adaptiv is in my purse right now. It's one that I have on me at all times. Because here's the thing: you can predict your day as much as you want, but you don't know what's going to change. And oftentimes we don't even know what's going to stress us out. We don't know what's going to throw us off.

I have had times where I've gone about my day not thinking that I was going to even need that oil and have become in great need of it. So, I would say the biggest thing is to be mindful about having your oils with you. Especially something like this that can be used all day long for different things that come up, emotionally.

And just like I said, smelling it, getting it out, rubbing some on your hands, putting your hands together, cupping them over your mouth, taking a few inhales. I also like to apply like over my heart and on my pulse points. So, making sure you have it with you so you can do that using it proactively.

Starting your day with it, or using it before you go in the meeting that you think might be stressful, versus you come out and you're stressed and you're trying to calm yourself down when you're already heightened.

And then being repetitive. I think that's a part that we sometimes forget with oils, is that they evaporate quickly off our skin, and so the scent can be gone fairly quickly. They metabolize quickly in our bodies, so we have to keep using them. Like, you find that, “Wow, that really calmed me down.” But maybe 30 minutes later you're feeling a little agitated again, use it again. That's the importance of having it next to you at all times.

I love the Touch roller for the purpose of traveling and just making it easy. But if you have a diffuser, obviously you want the blend with you to be able to diffuse.

Just continue to use it when you need it so that you're not only helping your mind with kind of the thoughts that might be coming in, around, whatever you're dealing with, but you're relaxing your body, so it's not you're not having that increased heartrate. You're not having all of those things that sometimes can lead to you not feeling good over time.

doTERRA: Yes, and I love that piece of being proactive rather than reactive, because I don't think people view stress in that way a lot. We are proactive about so many different pieces of our health, but I don't think that stress is one of them usually.

Kayla: Yeah, and I think that people don't realize when they're being proactive. Like, a lot of people will work out in the morning or, maybe do some yoga. Some people journal first thing in the morning. Some people read, some people incorporate prayer or meditation. And they're doing those things without realizing that it is having a big impact, probably, on how they're dealing with stress throughout their days.

doTERRA: Absolutely. Well, Kayla, thank you so much for sitting down with us today, teaching us a little bit more about the things we can do proactively, as well as in the moment, to make sure we are treating our body the best we can and managing our stress.

Kayla: Thank you for having me.
