Today, we're excited to talk to Jasmine Jafferali about supporting healthy digestion. Jasmine, thank you so much for being here with us today.
Jasmine Jafferali: Thank you for the opportunity to be here today!
doTERRA: Now this is a topic that gets a lot of attention. I think it's a really important thing. Can you explain to us why healthy digestion is so important?
Jasmine: Well, there's a few reasons why healthy digestion is important. You know, and we now know and understand that our gut health is the foundation for good health.
And one of the reasons being is that we also now, because of lots of research, the immune system lies in our gut. And there's this symbiotic relationship between gut health and immune health. They work off each other and they feed off each other. So when one is compromised, the other will be compromised. And this is one of the reasons why we need a really healthy foundation for our digestive wellness.
doTERRA: Absolutely. Now, Jasmine, what are some of the common reasons that my digestion might be having a few issues?
Jasmine: That's a great question! So there's a few reasons. I call it kind of the S's of creating a good foundation of health. One of it is reducing sugar. The other is improving sleep, and then also reducing stress. So we have sleep, sugar and stress.
When we eat a lot of sugar, for example, we just came off the holidays and any time between Halloween and New Year's Day, we are just eating out of—for most of us, it's not our normal way of eating. So we eat a lot of sugar and that suppresses immunity. But that also compromises digestive health because what is happening is that we're not really having a foundation of nutrient-dense foods. And that's—we need to eat a large amount of produce, you know, nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. We need to get high in fiber to improve digestive health. So just so those are some things to actually look at improving gut health.
But then we also have to look at stress, and stress can actually slow the flow of digestion. And then also stress suppresses immunity. So when digestion slows down, so either we are feeling a little more full in our digestive track. We may have some burning sensations in our digestive health.
So those are signs that we look at that, “Oh, we need to probably look at our diet. We need to look at how we manage our stress. We need to get better sleep” And these are just, you know, at least three things that we can do to help improve our overall gut health.
doTERRA: Absolutely. So you mentioned those three, you know, areas that might be some common reasons we're having problems. What are your recommendations for some simple lifestyle changes that we can make to promote that better and healthier digestion?
Jasmine: That's a great question. So I've often have been a big fan of digestive enzymes and so one of my favorite products, and I may be jumping ahead a little bit is, you know, DigestZen TerraZyme®. And when it talks about, you know, gut health and being able to break down our food sources when we have high stress, when we don't eat a really well-balanced diet, or we’re lacking sleep, our ability to absorb nutrients really lacks.
