Today, we're excited to talk to Kelly Mallinson about how she uses essential oils to create a relaxing environment. Kelly, thank you so much for being here to talk with us today.
Kelly Mallinson: It is my pleasure!
doTERRA: Now, my first question for you is kind of a broad one, but what can make our environment stressful for us?
Kelly: Oh, so many things can make our environment stressful—especially nowadays—homeschooling your children, like just looking at social media, people losing their jobs, children not listening (that's a big one), like finances, too many people being around, not enough people being around. At this time, people are not spending a lot of time with other people or they're spending too much time with the wrong people—just kidding—with our families.
doTERRA: Now, what are some of the effects that this stressful environment can have on our body and on our lives?
Kelly: Well, when we are feeling stress, it often it actually manifests in our body in a physical way. Like people can end up with tension, irritated like stomachs. Like I think that when we experience outward stress, we manifest it in our bodies a little bit more than we think we do. And we can have all kinds of different things. We can have like irritable mood. We can have lack of energy. Sleep is not the best when people are stressed.
doTERRA: So what are some lifestyle changes that maybe I can make to help reduce the stress and get rid of some of those negative effects?
Kelly: You know, one of the things that I always talk about, actually, is that when we have stress, we go into fight or flight. And it's really important to calm down in between the stressors because it's not like you're never going to have another stressful situation that comes upon you.
So in order to calm down in between stressors, like nice things to do for yourself, like go have a bath, do a little bit of self care, look up a meditation on YouTube, put your headphones on, and just check out for a few minutes. You could always do things like diffuse essential oils that's always helpful and calming to the environment. You can go for a walk. You can eat some healthy food. You can turn off your screens and stop looking at the social media and stop watching the news and read a book that's uplifting and makes you feel good.
doTERRA: Now, Kelly, switching gears just a little bit, you mentioned diffusing some essential oils. What are some essential oils that you recommend to help create that relaxing environment?
Kelly: One of the ones I've been really, really enjoying in my diffuser lately has been Siberian Fir. Siberian Fir and Wild Orange is amazing to throw in your diffuser.
Holiday Peace, that one is good all year round. I really love the tree oils. It makes me feel like I'm outside, and I'm feeling calm when I'm outside. So really bringing the outside in is a really good idea.
Lavender, Serenity, Balance. Oh, Balance is a huge one, as far as putting that in your diffuser and just chilling out a little bit.
My number one favorite oil though is Patchouli. So when I put Patchouli in the diffuser, usually mixed with some Grapefruit or with some Tangerine, it's really calming to me personally. I quite love it.
doTERRA: Those all sound incredible. Kelly, thank you so much for talking with us today, for sharing your tips on essential oils for a relaxing environment and also just things that we can do every day to help reduce that stress in our lives.
Kelly: You're welcome! It was my pleasure.
