Safety & Usage

The value of pure essential oils can be realized through three primary usage methods: aromatic diffusion/inhalation, topical application, and internal consumption. Every bottle of doTERRA essential oils can be enjoyed aromatically, and many can be safely applied to the skin. Some essential oils can be mildly skin sensitizing, so we recommend using a carrier oil, like Fractionated Coconut Oil, to dilute the essential oil and reduce the risk of irritation. Fractionated Coconut Oil not only hydrates the skin, but it may also increase the absorption of essential oils. Internal use of essential oils can be a safe and effective approach to access the therapeutic benefits of essential oils; however, this method requires a higher level of expertise and knowledge about the oil you intend to take internally. Not all essential oils are safe for ingestion so it’s important to read all the usage and safety information about a particular oil before you consider taking it internally. In both topical and internal applications of essential oils, dosage is an important part of the conversation. As you begin to incorporate essential oils in your daily routine, start with smaller doses throughout the day, just 1-2 drops, rather than one large single dose. This will allow you to more closely monitor your body’s unique response to a particular essential oil. Check out some of our articles below to learn more about the benefits and limitations of these three application methods.
