Skin Cells and Essential Oils

A new study conducted by doTERRA scientists explored the biological activity of nine single essential oils and one essential oil blend. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques were used to determine the chemical constituents and their percent composition for each oil. The oils included in the study were Bergamot, Cilantro, Geranium, Helichrysum, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Sandalwood, Spikenard, Ylang Ylang, and the Immortelle® blend.1

Using the BioMAP® system, the researchers were able to conduct an in-depth study on the oils’ effects on human skin cells. Human dermal fibroblasts were grown in a dish, factors were applied to trigger an inflammatory response, and the afflicted cells were exposed to essential oils.1,2,3 The scientists examined the oils’ effect by measuring changes in the levels of 17 protein biomarkers known to be related to inflammation and tissue remodeling.

Each of the 10 essential oils had a significant effect on the pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblasts, although the effects varied for each oil. Every oil tested had strong and significant anti-proliferative activity.1 Bergamot, Cilantro, and Spikenard essential oils significantly inhibited biomarkers related to inflammatory, tissue remodeling, and immunomodulatory processes.1 Helichrysum, Ylang Ylang, and Immortelle essential oils significantly inhibited several tissue-remodeling biomarkers.1

These findings demonstrate that each of the 10 oils studied is biologically active in human skin cells, and they probably exert their effects via different mechanisms. Many of the essential oils examined in this study were found to support a healthy inflammatory response, normal immune function, and healthy wound healing.*
