The Science Behind Blue Lotus Touch

Article at a Glance

The doTERRA science team dug into the science behind the new limited time offer, Blue Lotus Touch. This unique oil adds to the powerful combination of florals you find in the doTERRA Precious Florals Mother’s Day Collection. Now, let’s take a closer look at this special oil.

What is Blue Lotus Touch?

Blue Lotus Touch is a special, limited-time offer for Mother’s Day. This absolute is extracted from the petals of Nymphea caerulea, otherwise known as the blue water lily or blue lotus. You can use the oil aromatically but its chemical composition makes topical use a clear strength. In order to maximize the unique benefits of this oil, doTERRA scientists chose to blend it with Fractionated Coconut Oil and offer it as a touch product.

Including Blue Lotus in Your Skincare Routine

Blue Lotus is rich in the unique triterpene, squalene, which may support the body’s natural ability to hydrate the skin. The other part of this blend is Fractionated Coconut Oil. “Fractionated” means that the long-chain fatty acids have been removed from the oil. The remaining medium-chain fatty acids contained in doTERRA’s Fractionated Coconut Oil are more easily absorbed by the skin so that greasy residue isn’t left behind.1,2 These fatty acids, together with the Blue Lotus absolute, may leave you feeling like your skin is more hydrated.3

A Closer Look at Squalene

Squalene is a new constituent among doTERRA products. One thing that makes it unique is the role that it plays in human physiology. Research has shown that squalene is one of the epidermal surface lipids (skin oils) produced naturally by the body.4 At the microscopic level, your skin cells excrete fat-based compounds, called lipids, and they fill the space between skin cells. This mixture of lipids, which scientists call sebum, is the oil that ultimately makes its way to the surface of your skin, promoting hydration as part of your body’s mechanism for skin health. Squalene’s natural role in the health of your skin makes it of particular interest to essential oil researchers at doTERRA.

The Difference Between an Essential Oil and an Absolute

Blue Lotus is an absolute, making it a bit different from other doTERRA products. The difference lies in how the products are extracted from their sources. Essential oils are usually steam distilled from their plant source. However, certain types of plant material, such as the blossoming flower petals of the Blue Lotus, are too delicate for the high heat involved in the steam distillation process. In these cases, doTERRA uses a universal solvent to extract what’s called the absolute from the plant material.
