Jasmine Essential Oil

Introduction

If you’re at all acquainted with the aromatherapy or perfume industries, chances are you’ve heard the term absolute at least once before, most likely tied to jasmine. doTERRA Jasmine is part of the doTERRA Touch® line and sold as a mixture of Fractionated Coconut Oil and Jasmine absolute. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at jasmine, from flower to fragrance.

Jasmine Flowers

Named after a Persian word for “gift from God,” jasmine flowers bear strong cultural significance. Garlands of these delicate white flowers adorn brides, temples, and religious rituals worldwide, symbolizing good luck, hope, love, and purity. Jasmine flowers contain very little oil, making it precious and expensive. Fragrance manufacturers highly prize jasmine in their products for its sweet, heady scent.

What’s the Difference between an Absolute and an Essential Oil?

Essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds extracted from a plant. Absolutes are similar to essential oils, but they are obtained through a different process. Most essential oils are produced through steam distillation or cold press (expression) methods, but Jasmine absolute is produced by solvent extraction.

What Is Solvent Extraction?

Because jasmine flowers are so delicate, they can’t withstand the heat of steam distillation or the rigors of cold press. This makes these methods of essential oil extraction impossible without destroying the flowers. Instead, the essential oil is collected through a process called solvent extraction. In this process, a solvent is used to draw out the oil from the jasmine petals. Steam distillation and cold press are physical processes to collect essential oil from plants, but solvent extraction is a chemical process.
