Over the last several years, there has been an undeniable increase in conversations surrounding toxicity and detoxification—and rightly so. Our understanding of unwanted substances in the food supply, our homes, personal care products, and the environment has grown tremendously, leading many people to make thoughtful changes in the products they use and the lifestyle habits they practice to help minimize exposure to these chemical residues.
What often receives less attention, however, is the burden created through the body's own normal biological processes. One of the best examples is the incredible work our immune system performs every day. Supporting immune health isn't simply about preparing for seasonal challenges—it may also be another important way we support the body's natural ability to process and eliminate the normal byproducts produced during a healthy immune response.
When we think about supporting immunity, the conversation often centers on making the immune system "stronger."
I believe a more helpful way to think about immune health is to consider not only the strength of the immune response, but also the load we place upon it each day.
Healthy immunity is not simply about strength.
It is about balance.
Whether we realize it or not, we live in a world of external stressors. They surround us, colonize us, and reside within us—even some that have the potential to be harmful. Fortunately, our beautifully designed immune systems maintain a delicate balance that allows us to live in harmony with this world while continually protecting us from potential threats.
That balance, however, does not come without a cost.
Every immune response produces normal metabolic byproducts, much the same way any engine produces exhaust while performing useful work. The immune system recognizes and responds to these exposures while supporting the body’s natural processes.
This is a completely normal part of healthy immune function. Our immune systems are constantly monitoring, recognizing, communicating, and responding to the countless interactions that occur every day. Much of this remarkable work happens quietly behind the scenes, without us ever realizing it.
Every immune response requires energy.
Every immune response produces byproducts.
Every immune response contributes to the work the body performs to maintain health.
This is what I think of as immune load.
Immune load is the cumulative burden placed on the immune system as it continually responds to the world around us. Every day, our bodies encounter challenges through the air we breathe, the food we eat, the surfaces we touch, and the environments we move through. Most of these interactions are handled efficiently without us ever noticing. Others require a more coordinated immune response.
The more frequently the immune system must respond, the more work it performs. Just as an engine produces more exhaust the harder it works, increased immune activity results in more normal metabolic byproducts.
None of this is abnormal.
In fact, it reflects a healthy immune system doing exactly what it was designed to do.
However, it also reminds us that supporting wellness isn't simply about responding well. It is also about reducing unnecessary immune challenges whenever possible.
When people think about supporting wellness, they often focus on helping the body recover after challenges arise. An equally important strategy is helping reduce unnecessary challenges before they occur. Supporting balance in and around our bodies can help reduce the number of immune responses required, which in turn reduces the normal metabolic byproducts produced through immune activity.
Reducing this burden isn't a one-step approach.
Rather, it is a plan involving the optimal care of many interlinked and interdependent systems.
Supporting healthy immune function is one important part of that plan, helping the body maintain balance while also supporting its natural detoxification processes.
Many people would not immediately think of doTERRA On Guard® essential oil as part of a wellness strategy that also supports the body's natural detoxification processes.* But once we recognize that our daily toxic burden comes from multiple sources—both from the environment around us and from the normal work taking place within us—we begin to appreciate that reducing toxic load isn't accomplished through a single step.
Rather, it is a plan involving the optimal care of many interlinked and interdependent systems.
Preventing or reducing the accumulation of potentially harmful stressors is one important part of that strategy. When the immune system encounters fewer unnecessary challenges, it simply has less work to do. That means fewer immune responses are required, fewer normal metabolic byproducts are produced, and fewer exposures encountered by the immune system everyday.
Supporting balance, therefore, isn't simply about immune health. It also helps reduce the burden placed on the body's natural detoxification pathways by reducing both the normal byproducts of immune activity and the inherent stressors.
This doesn't mean eliminating every challenge—we couldn't, nor would we want to. Rather, the goal is to support a healthy balance while helping reduce unnecessary immune challenges whenever possible.
This perspective shifts the conversation from reacting after challenges arise to supporting the body's natural defenses every day.
In many ways, the best defense really is a good offense.
One phrase I often hear is that people love doTERRA On Guard® family of internal products because they "boost the immune system."
While I understand what people are trying to communicate, I avoid using that terminology.
The word boost suggests making the immune system stronger or more aggressive. For some people, that wording can create unnecessary concern because an overactive immune response isn't the goal of healthy immunity.
That simply isn't how I think about the role of doTERRA On Guard®.
A healthy immune system is one that functions appropriately. It recognizes potential challenges, responds when needed, communicates effectively with other immune cells, and then returns to balance once that work is complete. Supporting that balance is very different from simply stimulating immune activity.
That is why I prefer to describe doTERRA On Guard® as supporting a healthy, balanced immune response.*
This perspective is also consistent with emerging research on the doTERRA On Guard® Protective Blend. Laboratory research using human immune cell co-cultures has demonstrated that the proprietary blend influenced multiple biomarkers involved in healthy immune and inflammatory signaling.* While laboratory studies are not the same as human clinical trials, they provide valuable insight into how this unique combination of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils may help support pathways involved in healthy immune function and a balanced immune response.*
When viewed through the lens of immune load, the role of doTERRA On Guard® becomes even more meaningful.
Rather than asking the immune system to work harder, these doTERRA On Guard® family of internal products help support healthy immune function.*. By helping reduce unnecessary challenges, these products may also help reduce unnecessary immune burden—supporting both the immune system and the body's natural ability to process the normal byproducts of a healthy immune response.*
A robust and properly functioning immune system is a key supportive element in our overall wellness strategy.
Supporting immune health isn't about asking the immune system to do more.
It's about supporting it to do what it was beautifully designed to do.
Efficiently.
Appropriately.
Understanding the concept of immune load changes the way we think about supporting wellness. Rather than waiting until seasonal challenges arise, we can focus on simple, consistent habits that help reduce unnecessary demands on the immune system throughout the year.
That foundation begins with the basics. Nutritious foods, restorative sleep, regular physical activity, stress management, and healthy hygiene practices all work together to support healthy immune function. These everyday choices create an environment that allows the body's remarkable defense systems to function efficiently while supporting overall wellness.
The doTERRA On Guard® family of products can become part of that daily routine in practical ways. Diffusing the essential oil helps create a clean, uplifting environment, while products such as the Foaming Hand Wash, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Cleaner Concentrate, doTERRA On Guard™ Beadlets, and doTERRA On Guard+™ Softgels are easy to incorporate into everyday life. Used alongside healthy lifestyle practices, these products offer support as part of a proactive, everyday approach to wellness.
The goal isn't simply to reach for these products when challenges arise.
It's to build consistent routines that help support a wellness lifestyle while incorporating immune health habits every day.
One of the greatest misconceptions about immune health is that it only deserves our attention when we begin feeling run down.
In reality, our immune systems are working every minute of every day—quietly monitoring, communicating, adapting, and maintaining balance long before we ever notice their efforts. Every choice we make, from the foods we eat and the sleep we prioritize to the environments we create and the daily habits we practice, influences the demands placed upon this incredible system over time.
When we begin thinking in terms of immune load instead of simply immune strength, we gain a broader appreciation for how wellness is built.
Supporting the immune system isn't simply about preparing for seasonal challenges.
It is about helping reduce unnecessary burdens so the body can continue doing what it was designed to do every day.
Long-term wellness is rarely the result of one product or one healthy decision.
It is built through the consistent choices we make over time.
Nutritious foods.
Quality sleep.
Regular movement.
Healthy hygiene.
Daily wellness habits.
Each one contributes to supporting healthy immune function and reducing unnecessary immune load.
The doTERRA On Guard® family of products fits naturally within this approach—not because it includes internal products that "boost" the immune system, but because those products support healthy immune function as part of a consistent daily wellness routine.*
Because the healthiest immune system isn't necessarily the one that works the hardest.
It's the one that works exactly as it was designed to.
Quietly.
Efficiently.
And in balance.
