FUN FACT
The Nootka tree gets its name from the Nuu-chah-nulth tribes, a nation of Indigenous peoples of whose traditional home is along the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, Canada.

The British explorer who first encountered the Nuu-chah-nulth people not only mistook them for a single tribe, but he misunderstood the name of their nation as “Nootka” based on a similar-sounding word in their native language. As a result, the term Nootka was applied generally to the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, the coastal region they called home (now called Nootka Sound), and local flora, including the Nootka cedar.

The name Nuu-chah-nulth means “all along the mountains and sea. Today, it is used in place of Nootka to describe the First Nations of western Vancouver Island.
