How to Keep Healthy While Travelling

Summer holidays are approaching and to enjoy them to the fullest you want to stay healthy and happy! The truth is travelling can take its toll on your body; changing time zones, eating out every day and a lack of exercise are some of the factors that can make your immune system weaker than usual.

In this post we will share a few simple steps and tips that anyone can do in order to keep your body healthy even during your busiest travel days!

Sleep is key

Just as in our daily life, a good night of sleep is essential in order to keep everything working. Your body will need to rest after a full day of walking, carrying bags and sightseeing. Make sure you get enough sleep while traveling so that you don’t feel constantly tired. Consider packing a travel pillow and earplugs, especially for long plane, bus or train journeys.

Move and Stretch

Walking is usually the best way of sightseeing. Go on a walking or biking tour around the city and, to make things more exciting, count the kilometres you walk or cycle with your phone and try to beat your last record on the next day.

At the end of the day, in your apartment or hotel room, do some stretching or yoga to give your body a well-deserved rest.

Make your own meals

The food that we eat in restaurants often comes with a lot more fat, salt and sugar than what we are used to. Besides being unhealthier to eat out every day, it can also become quite expensive. However, there are a few things that you can do to keep to a healthier diet.

  • Take healthy snacks with you; nuts, protein bars or carrot sticks can help in those moments of sudden hunger!
  • Bring your own food to eat on the plane.
  • Commit to eating veggies with every meal, even when you're eating out.
  • Cut down on alcohol.
  • Go to a local supermarket and buy snacks like fruit or yoghurt.
  • If possible, book accommodation with a kitchen so you can cook your own food on some days.
  • Always carry a re-usable water bottle. Keeping hydrated is important!

Don’t forget your oils!

Some essentials oils can be super useful while travelling. Even though we would like to take all of them with us, that’s not possible. Therefore, here are a few essentials that you really can’t forget to pack:

  • doTERRA Balance: rub a few drops of Balance on the bottom of your feet to promote feelings of tranquillity and relaxation. Use it on busy days or before a flight.
  • ZenGest Softgels: For the occasional stomach upset, take a few Zengest softgels with you.
  • Peppermint: A super-versatile oil! It can ease your jetlag, one drop in water makes a great refreshing mouth rinse and its energising properties will help you to power through the most tiring days.
  • doTERRA On Guard Purifying Mist: Spray on airplane armrests and tray tables when travelling and use it to keep your hands fresh.
  • doTERRA Serenity: This blend was designed to calm the mind and soothe the senses, which makes it a great oil to use at bed time!
