Wintergreen Oil Uses and Benefits

Wintergreen oil description

Wintergreen essential oil is extracted from the aromatic leaves of a creeping evergreen shrub, providing a scent that is sweet, minty, and refreshing. Its aroma can be both uplifting and invigorating, especially when combined with other mint essential oils or sweet citrus essential oils for diffusion. Wintergreen essential oil also holds powerful topical benefits because it contains a unique chemical component called methyl salicylate. This component provides strong skin-soothing properties and occurs naturally in only two plants worldwide—birch and wintergreen. Because of this distinctive chemical makeup, Wintergreen essential oil is treasured for its topical skin-soothing benefits and is commonly used in lotions, creams, and oral hygiene products. The skin-soothing sensation of Wintergreen oil also makes it an ideal essential oil to use in massage.

How do I use Wintergreen oil?

  1. Massage: Because Wintergreen oil is rich in the chemical component methyl salicylate, it is an ideal oil to use in soothing the skin during a relaxing massage. For a warming and soothing topical sensation while you massage, combine two drops of Wintergreen oil with Fractionated Coconut Oil and massage into desired areas in gentle circles.
  2. Deodorizing: The minty, fresh, slightly sweet aroma of Wintergreen essential oil is a strong and pleasant scent that helps dispel unwanted odors. Place a few drops of Wintergreen oil on a cotton ball and place it in your gym bag or locker, or inside a shoe or cabinet to chase away odors and leave your belongings smelling fresh.
  3. Bath: After a long day, take some time to pamper yourself with a Wintergreen oil-infused bath. Simply add one to two drops of Wintergreen oil to a full tub of warm bath water to enjoy the topical skin-soothing effects and invigorating aroma of Wintergreen essential oil while you soak.
  4. Oral Care: The refreshingly minty taste and aroma of Wintergreen oil can enhance your oral hygiene routines. For an easy breath-freshening rinse, add a drop of Wintergreen oil to 30 mL of water, then rinse and spit. Alternatively, add a drop of Wintergreen oil to your toothbrush each morning for a lasting clean, minty feeling.
  5. Diffusion: Bring the freshness of Wintergreen essential oil into your home by adding three to five drops of Wintergreen oil into a diffuser of your choice and diffusing for an invigorating atmosphere in any room. For an especially evergreen aroma, combine Wintergreen oil with a drop of any of the needle essential oils.

How is Wintergreen oil sourced?

As part of the doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing™ initiative, Wintergreen essential oil is sourced in rural regions of Nepal. In the communities where wintergreen is wild-harvested, many families live in poverty and have limited opportunities for income due to their remote location and because of natural disasters.

The doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing™ initiative in Nepal allows harvesters to receive steady income from their valuable wintergreen crop, providing the resources they need to feed their families, buy clothes for their children, and send them to school.

What is Wintergreen oil?

The wintergreen plant, Gaultheria fragrantissima, is a creeping shrub that is found in coniferous areas. Wintergreen requires a cool climate in a shady, heavily forested area, with very specific soil conditions, such as those found in the Himalayan foothills. The plant produces clusters of bright red berries, and has leaves that are rich green in color, glossy, and contain a prominent central vein. doTERRA Wintergreen essential oil is extracted from these highly aromatic leaves at a very low, but incredibly worthwhile, yield rate.
