Oregano Oil Uses and Benefits

Oregano Oil Product Description

Oregano oil is one of our most potent essential oils and has been used for centuries in traditional practices. Today, this essential oil—extracted from the fragrant leaves of the oregano herb—has made its way into cooking, cleaning cabinets, and beyond. Oregano essential oil is versatile and powerful, due to a high concentration of both carvacol and thymol—two phenol chemicals with profound topical cleansing properties.

Because it’s so potent, we created doTERRA Touch® Oregano—a proprietary blend of Oregano essential oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil that makes it easy to enjoy the benefits of Oregano oil, even if you have sensitive skin! Since doTERRA Touch Oregano is pre-diluted, it’s an ideal alternative for topical application, people with sensitive skin, or for on-the-go use.

Because of Oregano essential oil’s high phenol content, use caution when diffusing or inhaling—you only one to two drops. When applied topically, always dilute Oregano essential oil with Fractionated Coconut Oil.

How Do I Use Oregano Oil?

  1. Nail Care: Dilute one drop of Oregano oil with ten drops of Fractionated Coconut Oil and apply to the cuticles and nailbeds of your hands and feet. Repeat once a week to maintain clean, healthy-looking fingernails and toenails.
  2. Home Cooking: Enhance the flavors of any recipe with the warm herbal taste of Oregano oil. When your favorite dish calls for ground or dried oregano, simply replace it with Oregano oil (about one drop per tablespoon of dried oregano spice) for a delicious seasoning to sauces, soups, roasts, compound butters, and more.
Tip: Use the toothpick method when replacing any amount of dried oregano less than one tablespoon! Dip a toothpick into the Oregano oil, then stir the toothpick into the dish. You’ll be surprised at how quickly this potent oil flavors your food.
  3. Home Cleaner: The phenol content in Oregano essential oil makes it one of the best naturally sourced topical cleaning agents in the essential oil world. For a quick and easy all-purpose cleaner, add 10 drops of Oregano oil to a 473 mL spray bottle with water and use to clean countertops, tables, and other surfaces around your house.
  4. Diffusion: Give any diffuser blend a warm and herbaceous aromatic note by adding one drop of Oregano oil. We recommend diffusing one drop of Oregano oil with two drops each of Peppermint oil and Lime oil for an invigorating aroma, perfect for cold months.

Fun Fact

The name “oregano” is derived from the Greek words oros, meaning mountain, and ganos, meaning joy. Combined, the name of the herb means “joy of the mountain.”

What is Oregano oil?

The oregano plant, Origanum vulgare, is a bushy perennial that is part of the Lamiaceae family. The oregano plant grows best in dry- to medium-moisture and well-drained soils, and thrives in full sunlight. The leaves of the plant are rounded or ovate in shape and famously fragrant. This plant also produces tiny, pinkish-purple or white flowers. We extract our Oregano essential oil from the leaves of this plant.

What Essential Oils Blend Well with Oregano?

Oregano essential oil blends well with essentials oils that are either herbaceous or invigorating, such as Peppermint oil, Lavender oil, Basil oil, Rosemary oil, Bergamot oil, Cypress oil, and Tea Tree oil.
