    Vanilla planifolia is a member of the orchid family, with yellow-white flowers that produce odourless bean pods. These blooms must be hand-pollinated, and it takes three to four years for the plant to begin producing beans. The harvest is a crucial source of employment for rural communities and an integral part of the local economy, contributing to the livelihoods of almost 80,000 farmers.
