Lavender and the Immune System

Researchers in Japan recently (July 2015) studied how ingested Lavender essential oil affects three main organs of the body: the small intestine, the spleen, and the liver. After test subjects ingested the oils for several days, the researchers analyzed changes in DNA gene expression in the cells of these organs. They found that Lavender oil ingestion caused changes in genes involved in the immune system. Traditionally known for other roles, these three organs are also involved in the body’s immune response. These results suggest that lavender essential oil may have a potential role in immune system support.*

Note: this was an experimental, non-clinical study.
