For six years, doTERRA Wellness Advocate Maria “Simone” Korbe has owned her own soap business, but it is the motive behind her business that makes this mom’s story so inspiring. It began 18 years ago when she gave birth to her small, yet mighty, son, Quinton, who was born with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome. This syndrome left Quinton with numerous difficulties and pains, and as a result, he needs a loving hand to be with him and care for him at all hours of the day. These intensive needs inspire Simone to work hard so that she can be there for Quinton.

 

In order to give her son the care he needs now and in the future, Simone works in her spare time to make and sell beautiful bars of old-fashioned soap for her business—Scentual Soap. She says, “after my soap supplies are covered each month, I am putting away for my son’s future care.” Because Cornelia de Lange Syndrome is a multi-system syndrome, it takes a lot of time, dedication, and finances to be there for Quinton in his times of need.

 

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome affects many parts of the body and can also cause pain and difficulties for the individual. Some of the characteristics of this syndrome include low birth weight, slow growth, developmental delays, disfigured limbs, and distinctive facial features. Many behavioral issues are also associated with this syndrome such as self-injury (which can cause the individual pain and harm), autistic-like behaviors, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).¹ Another common ailment experienced by people with this syndrome is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).² This is a disease that can also cause a lot of pain and can onset eating difficulties.

 

This all-effecting syndrome has influenced Simone, her husband, and her four healthy daughters greatly, but it has also helped them cherish the little aspects of life. They "see the tiny things that Quinton does and celebrate each tiny stride he makes." Seeing Quinton happy motivates Simone to keep pressing forward, to use her spare time to create nourishing soaps for others, and to step optimistically forward for Quinton and the family.
