Mist clings to the lush valley fields of the Pacific Northwest. Rows of deep green plants stretch across the ground, their vibrant leaves shining from the morning dew as the sun’s first rays break through. A crisp, invigorating scent covers the land, the unmistakable scent of peppermint. Among the Oregon hills, streams, and multigenerational family farms, the story of Peppermint essential oil takes root, weaving together earth, tradition, and diligent, loving hands.
The Pacific Northwest has exactly what the peppermint plant needs to thrive: rich and well-draining soil, cool nights, warm days, and abundant water. On average, the region receives 30 to 100 inches of rainfall annually. This ideal climate coaxes out the rich aromatic compounds, particularly menthol, and creates Peppermint oil that’s renowned for its potency and purity. Farmers, many with deep family roots in the area, have perfected the art of growing peppermint. They walk the fields, observing the plants with knowledge passed down across decades.
Their work is a stewardship, an ongoing relationship with the land that sustains them. Through Co-Impact Sourcing® initiatives, doTERRA works directly with these farmers and distillers, cutting out middlemen in an effort to prioritize ethical practices, compensation, and sustainable agricultural methods. These kinds of partnerships empower smaller communities, safeguard the environment, and preserve the botanical integrity of peppermint.
Peppermint harvesting is a long-term commitment. Farmers spend almost every day of the year caring for the plants until the short harvest window. The leaves and stems must be collected when their essential oil content reaches its peak, as the tiny oil sacs are full to bursting.
Farmers move quickly but carefully. After being harvested, the plant materials are transported to a distillation facility. There, steam distillation captures the essential oil without compromising its composition. Peppermint oil is usually distilled within two days of harvest, taking four to six hours per batch. With three pounds of plant material, you get one beautiful bottle of Peppermint essential oil. The spent biomass after the process is completed is used to fuel the distillation boilers, creating a more efficient and effective process.
