    Travel Questions

When should I arrive at the airport?
    • Recommended international check-in time is at least three hours prior to departure (depending on Homeland Security threat level). Please call the airline or access the airline's Internet site to check for schedule changes/flight delays and reconfirm recommended check-in time prior to leaving for the airport.
    What should I pack?
    • Pack light, comfortable clothing, including walking shorts, light trousers, short-sleeved shirts, and dresses. Make sure to pack comfortable sandals or shoes, and don't forget a swimsuit, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring layers such as a sweater or wrap, for cooler evenings.
How much luggage can I take?
    • Most carriers now charge a fee for checked luggage. In general you will be allowed up to two (2) checked bags for a fee, and one (1) carry-on bag free of charge that must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Please check with your airline to confirm the current luggage limitations and any applicable fees. As a reminder, please do not pack your valuables or things you will need within the next 24 hours in your checked luggage. These include (but are not limited to) your passport, credit cards/cash, laptop, camera, cell phone, jewelry, glasses, contact lenses and solution (note size limits), and medication. Please be sure your bags are checked through to your final destination, Kona International Airport.
    What items can I carry-on?
    • For an up-to-date list of items banned from carry-on luggage and items that you can carry on, please visit: http://ww.tsa.gov/.
Should I lock my checked luggage?
    • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may need to open your checked bags in order to perform a random security screening. If your bags are locked, TSA will break the locks during the screening process and does not assume liability for any damage this may cause. TSA-recognized locks, which can be opened by TSA using tools provided by luggage-industry members, help prevent the need to break locks. However, TSA-recognized locks are still occasionally broken during the screening process. If you want to guarantee that your checked bags are not forced open, leave them unlocked, but make sure you carry all documentation and valuables with you.
What will the weather be like?
    • Expect highs up to 82°F during the day, and lows around 62°F in the evening.
    What is the time difference?
    • The Big Island is on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (GMT - 10:00).
    What is the electrical voltage?
    • Standard voltage is 110 volts in the United States.
    Can I drink the water?
    • Hawaii has long prided itself on the taste of its tap water, which is filtered naturally through porous volcanic rock. Not only is Hawaiian tap water safe to drink, but it lacks the chlorine taste present in many areas of the United States.
    What about safety?
    • Although tourist areas are generally safe, visitors should always stay alert, even in laidback Hawaii. Generally speaking, you can feel safe in areas where there are many people and lots of open establishments.
    • If you get a car, park in well-lit and well-traveled areas, if possible. Never leave any packages or valuables visible in the car.
    • Please do not leave cash, jewelry, credit cards, or other valuables unattended in your hotel room or on the beach. The hotel has safe deposit facilities for your valuables. Be particularly careful with cameras, purses and wallets.
    • Use the same common sense traveling that you would at home.
    • Most of Hawaii's beaches look inviting, but swimming in the ocean is unlike swimming in a pool and especially in Hawaii, powerful shorebreaks, high surf, strong currents and rip tides are common. The ocean may look calm, but currents, unlike high surf, are difficult to spot. Please be cautious when entering the ocean at any time.
    • To ensure your safety in the water and on the beach follow these guidelines:

                               1. Choose a beach with a lifeguard

                               2. Pay attention to beach warning signs

                               3. Don't swim at remote beaches

                               4. Never turn your back to the ocean

                               5. If in doubt, don't go out

What's not included that I can expect to pay for?
    • All personal travel expenses, such as activities you book on your own, phone calls, and dry-cleaning/laundry services, are your responsibility and must be paid for upon check-out.
    • You will also be responsible for lunches each day and dinners on the nights where we are not holding a dinner function.
    How can I be contacted?
    • For your convenience, a leave-behind card with your hotel's contact information will be included with your documents.
