Travel Questions

When should I arrive at the airport?
Recommended international check-in time is at least three hours prior to the plane’s departure (this can vary). Please call the airline or access the airline’s website to check on schedule changes or flight delays, as well as to reconfirm recommended check-in time prior to leaving for the airport.

What should I pack?
Pack light and comfortable clothing, including walking shorts, capri-style pants, light trousers, short-sleeved shirts, and dresses. Make sure you pack a pair of comfortable sandals or shoes—and of course don’t forget a swimsuit, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Bring layers, such as a sweater or wrap, for cooler evenings.

How much luggage can I take?
Most carriers now charge a fee for checked luggage. In general, you’ll be allowed up to two checked bags for a fee and one free carry-on bag that must fit in an overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Please check with your airline to confirm current luggage limitations and any applicable fees.

As a reminder, please don’t pack your valuables or things you’ll need within the next 24 hours in your checked luggage. These include but aren’t limited to your passport, credit cards, cash, laptops, cameras, cell phones, jewelry, glasses, contact lenses and solution (note size limits), and medication.

Be sure your bags are checked through to your final destination: Cancun International Airport.

What items can I carry on?
For an up-to-date list of items that are banned from carry-on luggage, please visit http://ww.tsa.gov/.

Should I lock my checked luggage?
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may need to open your checked bags to perform a random security screening. If your bags are locked, TSA will break the locks during the screening process and doesn’t assume liability for any damage this may cause. TSA-recognized locks, which can be opened by the TSA using tools provided by luggage-industry members, help prevent the need to break locks. However, TSA-recognized locks are still occasionally broken during the screening process.

If you want to guarantee that your checked bags aren’t forced open, leave them unlocked, making sure to carry all documentation and valuables with you.

What will the weather be like?
Expect highs of up to 83 °F during the day and lows around 67 °F in the evening.

What’s the time difference?
Cancun is on Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5).

What’s the electrical voltage?
Standard voltage in Cancun is 110 volts.

Hotels usually offer converters for 220-volt devices. Many sockets don’t accept polarized or three-prong plugs, so it’s recommended that you bring your own adapter.

Can I drink the water?
Anyone visiting Cancun on vacation is advised to drink bottled water. Regardless of whether the tap water meets the standards of safety needed for drinking, a change in water from what you’re used to can cause an upset stomach.

Clean drinking water will be provided at the hotel.

What about safety?
Though tourist areas are generally safe, visitors should always be alert. Generally speaking, you can feel safe in areas where there are many people and lots of open establishments.

If you get a car, park in well-lit and well-traveled areas if possible. Never leave any packages or valuables visible in the car.

Don’t leave cash, jewelry, credit cards, or other valuables unattended in your hotel room or on the beach. The hotel has safe deposit facilities for your valuables. Be particularly careful with cameras, purses, and wallets.

Use the same common sense while traveling that you would at home.

Be cautious when swimming in the ocean. The ocean may look calm, but currents (unlike high surf) are difficult to spot. Be cautious when entering the ocean at any time.

To ensure your safety in the water and on the beach, follow these guidelines:

  • Choose beaches with lifeguards.
  • Pay attention to beach warning signs.
  • Don’t swim at remote beaches.
  • Never turn your back to the ocean.
  • When in doubt, don’t go out.

What’s not included that I can expect to pay for?
All personal travel expenses—such as activities you book on your own, phone calls, and dry-cleaning or laundry services—are your responsibility and must be paid for upon checkout.

How can I be contacted?
For your convenience, a leave-behind card with your hotel’s contact information will be included with your travel documents.
