The dōTERRA Healing Hands Foundation™ donates needed resources to improve the health care community in Nicaragua

In 2012, doTERRA Wellness Advocate Juli Yelnik was pursuing a master’s of science in acupuncture and oriental medicine when she learned about Natural Doctors International (NDI). NDI is a neuropathic global health organization that helps people around the world, and Yelnik could tell right away that this was something she wanted to get involved with. In 2013, Yelnik took her first trip to Nicaragua with NDI, falling even further in love with the organization and the work they do.

Unlike many of the traveling relief clinics around the world, the Natural Doctors International clinic on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua has worked to establish a stable, long-term clinic that serves people on a cluster of Nicaraguan islands. At this clinic, doctors track patient care, provide long-term care solutions, and keep professionals in the area to help improve health care in the community.
In January of 2015, the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation made a donation that helped NDI with needed resources. Yelnik says of the donation, “As a Wellness Advocate, I was so proud to see the small clinic stockroom stuffed full.”
For most people in Ometepe and the surrounding islands, it is extremely difficult to get medical care. A majority of the population must travel for hours and pay expensive travel fees to receive basic care. The Natural Doctors International clinic in Ometepe provides free care for Nicaraguans who need blood sugar testing, acupuncture, parasitic treatment, and more. NDI enlists the help of professional naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, psychologists, and acupuncturists to help at the clinic throughout the year. The clinic typically has one or two doctors on site, and relies heavily on help from brigades of volunteers, including students from various medical programs.
About her work with Natural Doctors International, Yelnik says, “Serving NDI's patient population, from infants to elderly, is refreshing. To see a mother walk hours with her four young children, wait for hours in the tropical heat, and smile the whole time in appreciation of our services, is heart-warming. The deserving community makes the long travel days and the sometimes unbearable heat all worthwhile.”
The doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation was excited by the opportunity to support the NDI clinic in hopes of helping the efforts of Juli and other volunteers. With help from medical professionals and devoted volunteers, Natural Doctors International will continue to provide much-needed care to truly deserving people on these remote Nicaraguan islands.
