Wellness Advocates Build Classrooms for Children in Rural Africa

Wellness Advocates build school, cistern, and latrine for community in Africa with non-profit organizations Koins for Kenya and Change to Heal

While attending a trip in Bofu, Africa, with Koins for Kenya in April of 2012, doTERRA leader Carol Ann Guest became acquainted with Wellness Advocate Tracy Jackson. Guest recalls that Jackson loved the expedition, but was especially motivated by the idea of building classrooms for children in rural Africa.

In the past 15 years, Koins for Kenya has constructed over 70 schools in Kenya, providing room for over 14,000 children to attend school and receive an education. The locals work together alongside volunteers from Koins for Kenya to make bricks and build classrooms. Wood trusses, window frames, doors, and desks are made from wood cut from lumber in the surrounding areas and fashioned by local craftsmen called “fundi.”

Jackson, with her non-profit organization Change to Heal, recruited Guest in the spring of 2016 to help fundraise for another expedition with Koins for Kenya. This expedition would allow the women to build a school in the rural Dipo Village in Africa where classes were exceeding 110 students due to lack of schoolroom space.

After hosting a rather successful fundraising dinner and auction, $6,000 had been raised by Guest and Jackson for their project. As part of their partner project matching campaign, this amount was matched by the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation™. Koins for Kenya and Change to Heal used these donations not only to build a school in this area of Africa, but also to install a cistern and latrine for the community.

Says Guest, “I want to thank Tracy Jackson for her relentless efforts in making this happen and I want to thank the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation for going above and beyond and for matching our donation for this great cause!”
