Becoming a dōTERRA Leader

For doTERRA Wellness Advocates, one of the greatest steps in personal development is often the transition into a leadership role. Even for those who have experience in other types of leadership, nothing quite prepares you for everything it means to be a leader in doTERRA. Now, you don’t necessarily need to hit a Leadership rank like Silver or Diamond to start becoming a leader in your business and your team. In fact, you can start becoming a leader and developing leadership skills long before hitting specific ranks. Here are five key steps to becoming an effective leader:

1. Lead Yourself

Create a culture of excellence for yourself. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you how you should serve your customers, how you should interact with team members, or how you should respond to various situations. Decide that you will be excellent, and hold yourself to this standard. Being a self-starter is one of the greatest traits in a leader.

2. Invest Discretionary Time

For most successful doTERRA leaders, there was something they gave up in order to fully commit to their business and take it to the next level. That is often discretionary time—time that was previously used for activities like watching TV, shopping, relaxing, or even sleeping. It’s up to you what you do with your time, so make the most of it. Just as you can invest money in your business, you should also invest your time. It’s just as valuable.

3. Maximize Mentorships

Find a mentor who does what you want to do, and learn how they got to where they are. Make a connection and form a real relationship. Learn how you can best maximize this mentorship—does your mentor like to answer questions via email, do they give amazing trainings you need to be sure to attend, or do they share their wisdom with you over a meal? Don’t just listen to what they tell you, but watch what they do.

4. Ask Questions

Good leaders ask good questions that help them better understand a situation or a person. Don’t be afraid to ask a question if you come across something in your business that you don’t understand. That’s how you learn! Your answers may come in various forms— from a book, a webinar, a guide provided by doTERRA, or from an upline, crossline, or downline member.

5. Find Your Replacement

We don’t necessarily mean that you need to find someone who will take your place and you will stop building your business, but find someone who can duplicate what you do and be just as successful—or even more successful. Duplication is one of the keys to building a strong, stable business. This is how your business grows and how doTERRA products continue to change more and more lives.
